CLAT (LLB/LLM)

Course Description

The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is a national-level entrance examination conducted in India for admission to undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) law programs offered by National Law Universities (NLUs) and other participating institutions. The exam is organized annually by the Consortium of National Law Universities and serves as the primary gateway to prestigious law colleges across the country.

Program Classification for Law Entrance Exams (CLAT – UG & PG)

I. Undergraduate Law Programs (CLAT UG – 5-Year LL.B.)

Educational Qualification: Candidates must have passed Senior Secondary Level (10+2) or an equivalent examination. Students appearing for their Class 12 examination in the year of admission are also eligible, subject to submission of passing proof at the time of admission.

Minimum Marks (Class 12):

  • General / OBC / PWD / NRI / PIO / OCI: Minimum 45% aggregate marks or equivalent grade
  • SC / ST: Minimum 40% aggregate marks or equivalent grade

Age Limit: There is no age limit for CLAT UG candidates.

Nationality: Indian Nationals, NRIs, PIO, and OCI candidates are eligible to apply.

II. Postgraduate Law Programs (CLAT PG – LL.M.)

Educational Qualification: Applicants must hold an LL.B. degree (3-year or 5-year integrated program) or an equivalent qualification. Candidates appearing in the final year or semester of their LL.B. program may also apply, subject to verification at admission.

Minimum Marks (LL.B.):

  • General / OBC / PWD / NRI / PIO / OCI: Minimum 50% aggregate marks or equivalent grade
  • SC / ST: Minimum 45% aggregate marks or equivalent grade

Age Limit: There is no upper age limit for CLAT PG applicants.

Nationality: Indian Nationals, NRIs, PIOs, and OCI candidates are eligible to apply.

PCS (Judicial Services) – Civil Judge (JMFC)

Course Description

The Provincial Civil Service – Judicial Examination (PCS J) is an entry-level state-level exam for law graduates aspiring to join the subordinate judiciary (e.g., Civil Judge, Junior Division, or Judicial Magistrate) in various states of India. Eligibility criteria and exam details vary slightly across states, such as UP PCS J, MP PCS J, Punjab PCS J, etc.

General Eligibility Criteria

1. Educational Qualification

LL.B. Degree: Candidates must hold an LL.B. degree, either:

  • 3-year program after graduation, or
  • 5-year integrated program after Class 12 (10+2)

The degree must be from a university or institution recognized by the Bar Council of India (BCI).

2. Age Limit

  • Minimum Age: Generally 21–22 years
  • Maximum Age: Typically 32–37 years, depending on the state
  • Age Relaxation: Provided for reserved categories (SC, ST, OBC) and other special categories as per respective state rules

3. Nationality

Must be a citizen of India. In some states, subjects of Nepal or Bhutan, or certain migrants of Indian origin intending permanent settlement in India, may also be eligible (subject to official documentation).

4. Other Requirements

Language Proficiency: Knowledge of the state’s official language is mandatory (e.g., Hindi in Devanagari script for Uttar Pradesh).

Work Experience: Not required; fresh law graduates are eligible.
